One of the possible activities for the club is touring the Mahle plant in Lockport. The plant primarily designs and creates HVAC units for motor vehicles, and has been part of other companies in the past - including Harrison Radiators, Delphi Thermal, and GM. Inside the plant, there are a lot of interesting things to explore. They have an electronics lab, a machine shop, a whole corridor of cubicles filled with nothing but HVAC models for various motorized vehicles, and a display of various projects and inventions that have been created at the plant over the years.
Mahle is primarily a place for mechanical, electrical, and software engineers. The Lockport plant employes all three, and they also have an internship program for college students. Overall it's a very interesting place, and some of the projects that have been developed at the plant are pretty incredible. For example, back when the plant belonged to GM my father and his coworkers worked on designing an air conditioning system for an electric car in the early 90s. I'm pretty sure that the car was the first mass-produced electric vehicle created by GM. He also worked on creating an automotive air conditioning system that used a physics-based model for the foundations of the algorithm rather than an electromechanical system, and the first electronic variable displacement compressor back when the company was a part of Harrison Radiators.
In short, there's a lot of interesting things and history that's been created at that plant, and I think it'd be a great place for us to go visit. My father is pretty confident that they would be able to give us a tour for a reduced rate, if not for free. It's also a potential source for a local job and/or internship for anyone in engineering as well.
